League Cup Preview: Newport County, Mansfield Town prepare for return Football League newcomers Newport County travel to Brighton on Tuesday for their first League Cup tie in over 25 years. Justin Edinburgh's side secured promotion to League Two with a play-off win over Wrexham and began the new season in style with a 4-1 victory over Accrington Stanley on Saturday. County's last League Cup fixture saw them beaten by Crystal Palace in 1987, the Welsh side losing 4-0 in  Nike Free Running Shoe  second round. A tricky first-round tie now awaits away at Championship side Brighton, who under new manager Oscar Garcia lost their opening-day game with Leeds United. Fellow League  Nike GS III ACC Soccer  new-boys Mansfield Town are on the road at Tranmere Rovers for their first taste of League Cup action since their relegation in 2008. Rovers manager Ronnie Moore will be keen for his League One side to avoid a potential banana skin against a team that lost 11 times on their way to the Football Conference title last season. Last season's beaten finalists Bradford City face a first-round tie with Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town. Phil Parkinson's side won six matches in the competition last season to reach the Wembley showpiece before being soundly beaten by Swansea City, although the cup run provided the momentum for a successful promotion push. Harry Redknapp's QPR, fresh from their relegation to the Championship, face a trip to League Two Exeter Rangers, who won this competition in 1966-67, came from a goal down to win 2-1 on Saturday against Sheffield Wednesday thanks to goals from Nedum Onuoha and Andrew Johnson. The first round of this year's competition sees plenty of local rivalries with Championship side Bournemouth making the 52 mile trip west to Portsmouth. Eddie Howe's side were unbeaten against Portsmouth last season and will hope to build on their victory over Charlton on Saturday. The first of the round's fixtures will see a Lancashire derby at Deepdale as Preston North End welcome Blackpool on Monday night. In the pick of the other ties, Wycombe Wanderers, Hartlepool United and Carlisle United will be hoping to cause an upset against Leicester City, Nottingham Forest and Blackburn Rovers respectively.
